A fire broke out on Tuesday, January 11th at Quail Ridge Apartments in northwest Oklahoma City, according to NewsOK. The fire broke out at 4:45pm, and flames were already pouring through the roof of the apartment complex when firefighters from a station less than a mile away arrived on scene. Considering a less than two minute response time as reported by fire Deputy Chief Cecil Clay, the fire advanced quickly. Clay said that eight units in the building were seriously damaged by fire or water, but all residents got out of the building safely and no one was injured. With below-freezing temperatures at the time of the fire, firefighters had their work cut out for them as they tried to fight the fire in the midst of ice created by the water from their hoses.
Investigators believe the cause of the fire may have been still-lit cigarettes discarded on a wooden patio at the bottom floor of the building, according to Clay. The fire started on the patio and then spread to a propane tank on a grill, which exploded.
